    Description

    This is an antique Japanese mid Meji Era (c. 1890) wood silk winder
    . There is a central hole which can be fitted onto a shaft for easy revolving, winding or unwinding. It is made form 8 pieces of cryptomeria wood that fit neatly together with multiple mortise and tenon fittings. Signed on the top in Japanese Kanji,
    Kishige
    (see picture 4).
    This winder
    is
    guaranteed
    to be
    over 100 years old
    , although probably much more, judging from the antique auction in Japan where it was acquired near Kyoto Japan. They are interesting as stand alone

    t and can be used as stands for a lot of things such as plants or bowls (see last three pictures) as it has a flat stable top in either position. Super cool, rustic, yet refined in a craftsman like way. It is made in a eight part construction which is all fitted together in
    overlapping
    joints as well as
    mortise
    and
    tenon
    joints.
    This antique spool measures 7" across by 7"
    tall  (17.5 x 17.5
    cm), and, along with a warm century old  patina, this winder
