The
Kokeshi Doll
was first made in the northeastern provinces of Japan about 150 years ago.
The
Kokeshi
was a simple wooden toy for the children who belonged to the farming households that predominated in the area.  It became much more than a toy as the countryside developed culturally, however, and refined, sophisticated pieces are now produced by Kokeshi craftsmen.
The
Kokeshi
is a charming, finely crafted representative of the traditional folk arts of Japan.
