You can see in the photos some screwdriver pry marks around the cap to replace the batteries. To prevent that from happening again, I'd suggest just giving it to a strong person to pull it straight off with his hand. I tried it and it works. No twisting, just pull it straight off with some muscle. It's difficult; only the strongest can do it.
Works fine, the buttons go through both speed settings.
