held from August 15 -18, 1969, on a dairy farm in Bethel

NY which was owned by Max Yasgur
. It was located 40 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock. The event was billed as "an Aquarian Exposition”, 3 Days of Peace & Music". It is alternatively referred to as the
Woodstock Rock Festival
. The event attracted an audience of more than 400,000. There were thirty-three acts which all performed outdoors despite sporadic rain.
The groups that performed were as follows:
Richie Havens, Satchidananda Saraswati, Sweetwater, Bret Sommer, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Quill, Country Joe McDonald, Santana, John Sebastian, Keef Hartley Band, The Incredible String Band, Canned Heat, Mountain, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin with The Kozmic Blues Band, Sly and the Family Stone, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker and the Grease Band, Country Joe and the Fish, Ten Years After, The Band, Johnny & Edgar Winter, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Sha Na Na, and Jimi Hendrix/Gypsy Sun & Rainbows.
The festival has become widely regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history as well as a defining event for the counter
culture generation.
Rolling Stone
magazine, in 2004, listed it as number 19 of the 50 Moments “That Changed the History of Rock and Roll”. In 2017, the festival site became listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
