Description
What a great rhythm guitar the Alvarez 5055 makes. It has a booming voice, and is loud as a cannon. They're not easy to find, but are a great example of well-made (and affordable!) "lawsuit era" made-in-Japan guitars!Obviously, these guitars owe a great deal to the Gibson J-200 model they (strongly) resemble, but there are some key differences, mostly in the body materials. The top, sides and back are all laminated rather than solid wood. (
Laminate spruce with x-bracing for the top, and laminate flamed maple for the back/sides). The advantage there is great stability and modest price.
The three-
piece maple neck is fast and straight, and the guitar has great action, even with heavy strings. The fretboard and bridge both appear to be rosewood, and the bridge saddle is height-adjustable.
Specs are: 25 5/8" scale, 1 11/16" nut width, 1 13/32" string spacing at the nut, 2 1/8" spacing at the bridge, 17" lower bout, 12 1/2" upper bout, and 4 7/8" side depth.
It has an LR Baggs passive iBeam interior pickup, which needs a preamp, but sounds great, both live and in the studio. Everything is pretty much original except for the tuners, which were replaced with Grovers (like they did a lot back in the '80s). For some reason, one tuner is nickel, while the others are gold. I vaguely recall speaking to the previous owner who did the tuner repair, and him claiming to be the (replacement) drummer for the band Badfinger! No idea if it's true.
As you'd expect, there are some nicks and scuffs, and some finish checking, but no cracks at all. (Thanks, plywood!) There's one noticeable ding on the upper bout, but it doesn't affect the guitar structurally at all. See photo. Visible, but not an issue.
Comes with a relatively recent black hardshell case.
No returns. It's a great guitar, so please give it a good home.
