Vintage Mighty Midget Microscope Set in Original Box 1960s with Slides

I believe Santa brought this to my sister and myself in the 1960s. I remember being tremendously excited to have OUR OWN MICROSCOPE!!!!! What a huge deal!!!!!
We were very careful with this, and it still has some of the original slides with it.
I believe everything adjusts and moves as it should - but when I look through the microscope all I see is black :(. I suspect I am doing something wrong as I haven't tried to use a microscope in decades!
This was packaged and distributed by Cranston Industries out of New York, and made in Japan.
The microscope includes six magnification options:
100x
150x
200x
300x
400x
500x
The mirror adjusts, the head moves up and down, and the three lenses move easily from one to the next.
The clamps still work well to hold a slide.
The microscope is about 5 3/4" tall fully extended.  The base is about 2 1/2" front to back and just under 2" side to side.
